Indonesia-EnglandLD: Indarti Issolina/Deyana Lomban, INA
- Gail Emms/Donna Kellog, ENG 15-8, 10-15, 15-17
Both teams are unknown for the majority, i.e. they are
not on the IBF ranking lists. But each - mayby except Issolina - do
feature high on the list with other partners.
Donna and Gail do get the first point, but then Indarti and Deyana pulls ahead, scoring on short rallies and errors from the english. They gain a 8-1 lead, when things starts going the other way, and errors becomes winning plays. Donna gets the final return af lot of times, and very often she fails - smashing into net on several occasions. But the english slowly gains points, 8-2, 8-3, 8-4. The indonesias played well, even if they where bothered from time to time by a door directly opposite them being opened, letting in a very strong, blinding sunlight. [We where blinded, anyway!] From 10-5 the english can match the indonesians, but Indarti and Deyana wins the first game. The 2. game saw Donna and Gail gain the initiave early, and keept it there. Still they tend to run for the same returns, but only a few times in this game. On the other side indonesians begins to make more errors when smashed at directly or in between them. The game was even at 4-4, but slowly, 1 or 2 points at the time, Gail An Donna got at 8-4 lead, and they kept the distance. The 3. game was very tight. It started with the indonesians opened up a 4-0 lead, before the englishment got a point. They only got even at 10-10, but until then, Donna was very frustraded, because whenever she tried to decide at point, she would fail - into the net or out of the court. It continued after 10-10, until the indonesians had their first game and match point. Then Donna seemed to get more concentrated, and she decided most of the points to 14- 14. The indonesian got the serve, but now the english worked as a team, never letting an occasinal loss influence on the next. The play to 17 was long and intense, and seemed to tip to the english, after a very long and intence exchange, where both side at times where out played, but saved it by a narrow margin at 15-15. The english gained the serve on a lucky roller on the net. Another play close to the net saw 16-15 to the english, and they won after a short play 17-15. MS: Taufik Hidayat, INA
- Michael Edge, ENG 15-9, 15-9
World no. 3 agains world no. 47 - not an even match. And Taufik got an easy
start, with at 4-0 lead, before Michael got a point. Taufik dominated, but at
9-3 he got problem with his right food. He lost an easy return from Michael,
and had to take a few breaks. He did not give up, but Michael got back in
the game and gained to 9-7. Taufik regained control and won 1. game 15-9.
In the 2. game, Michael fight hard to hang on, but Taufik is regaining confidence in his game. But Michael shows some bright plays now and then, and he is as close as 2 point, 10-8, when Taufik pulls away and wins 15-9. LS: Lidya Djaelawaijaya, INA
- Julia Mann, ENG 11-6, 11-8
Julia is nr. 6 on the IBF list, Lidya is no. 40.
Lidya did not play as no. 40 - she out played Julia from the beginning. Julia made many mistakes, not only on returns, but she misjudge the lines and failed to reach easy returns. Lidya get a 5-1 lead very easily, before Julia starts to figth back and not make so many mistakes. Even at 5-5, she never manage to hold on to Lidya, who moves ahead and wins 11-6. 2. game: Lydia continues to score, when she has the serve, and quickly gains 4-0. Julia is frustrated everytime she, looses a decider. As in the first game, she seems to get inspired, and starts playing when she is down like that. Her first point is won after a long rally, where she jumps, and spins and danses - and gets everything. The next few points she also places her shuttles close to the backline, out playing Lydia. But the moment pases, and Lydia gets to 6-3. Julia evens that to 6-6, but she needs to break often to dry her hands. Two more errors from Julia, and Lidya is ahead 8-6. Again - brilliant play from Julia, another even score 8-8. When Julia plays the backline she is very close, and some of here wins here was very, very close. The serve changes many times from now on, but Lidya gets the points, and wins 11-8. A close second game, but Lydia had the advantage and are clearly on road to succes in the world championships next week! MD: Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya, INA
- Anthony Clark/Nathan Robertson 15-5, 15-8
Anthony and Nathan tried very hard to gain som point from Tony and Chandra.
But the indonesians are very strong at the moment, and the outcome was never
in doubt. Particular at the beginning of each game, the english managed to
stop and play even with Chandra and Tony.
XD: Bambang Suprianto/Minarti Timur, INA
- Simon Archer/Gail Emms, ENG 5-5 (retired)
This game never got really started before Archers
injury, but the english started out strong, taking af 3-0 lead, before the
indonesians got going. The match could have been a long and even one, jugded
by those few plays we got to see.
