Thomas & Uber Cup - Badminton

Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Hong Kong - 15-24. May 1998

Thomas Cup - impressions from the final

The atmosphere in Queen Elizabeth Stadium was absolutely fantastic when Indonesia and Malaysia met in the final!

The indonesian crowd outnumbered the malaysian and was certainly the majority of the 3.000 in the stadium = full house! Dressed in red and white and provided with flags - drums - horns - flutes and voices they kept everyone awake for the full six hour final!

Indonesia played for the third successive win and succeeded with a 3-2 win

It was the seventh time Malaysia and Indonesimed in the Thomas Cup final. Indonesia is 5-2 ahead!

With a 3-1 lead Indonesia had won and the crowd was almost in ecstacy!
The players were very happy and danced around in the stadium! But the crowd - talk about entusiasm! Literally everybody was dancing on the barricades! And when the trophy was handed over to Indonesia everybody joined in on the Indonesian anthem!

Was the malaysians dissapointed? No doubt the players was but national coach Morten Frost wasn't! He took over the coaching 18 month prior to this Thomas cup final and has already made a difference since a lot of the players seem to have more joy playing badminton now than they have had in a long time!

After the final Morten Frost said that a malaysian win might have been "too easy and too soon!" Next to look forward to is the World Championships in Denmark May 1999 - and the next Thomas Cup in 2000.
