Masters 2001 - 27.12 Afternoon

Copenhagen Masters in Badminton

27-29 december, Copenhagen, Denmark

No. 1 - MD1

  Lars Paaske/Jonas Rasmussen, DEN
  - Anthony Clark/Nathan Robertson, ENG 7-9, 9-3, 5-9, 9-6, 9-2

First time the experimentalt 5 x 9 scoring system is used.

The experienced, english pair starte out strong against at new danish constellation. The first game took only 11 minutes - and was the longest! In the second game the danes bounched back, somewhat helped by Nathan Robertson, who was shaken by a decision against him.

In 4. the danes got at head start, at 7-3, but great english smashes equalled - almost. Anthony Clark missed the last try in the serve at 7-6, and the danes won after a very long, well played volley on their 2. serve.

The 5. started more equal and the served changed without score at 3-2 to the danes 4 times. Then on a 2. serve Lars Paaske served up to short volleys, which outplayed the english completely. 9-2!

No. 2 - LS2

  Pi Hong Yan, CHN
  - Cindana Hartono, INA 7-0, 7-2, 7-1
                                  (4', 9', 7')

I was obvious from the start, that Cindana Hartono was still suffering from her injuries. Pi Hong Yan only gave up one serve in the 4 minutes of the first game.

In the 2. game Cindana managed to gain points and playing longer volleys. But Pi Hong Yan was better still, and started scoring, winning 7-2

Pi Hong Yan had the game well in hand in the 3., only leaving 2 serve chances to Cindana.

No. 3 - MS1

  Kenneth Jonassen, DEN
  - Hendrawan, INA 7-0, 4-7, 7-5, 7-2
                             (3', 3', 10', 7')

A somewhat insecure world champion Hendrewan lost in about 4 minutes to the danish no. 2 Kenneth Jonassen 7-0. Hendrawan only got one serve in that game!

Hendrawan spillede stærkt i 4. sæt, men Kenneth gav den hele armen - og det var med til at skabe turneringens første sensation. Danskeren vandt 7-2 og dermed matchen!

He quickly regained his usual strenght in the 2. game. Jonas started scoring 2 on the first serve of the game, but then the indonesian sparkled and scored 4 in a row, and went on to win 7-4.

An even 3. game ended with Jonassen winning 7-5, even though he lost the longest - and best volley so far in the tournament. He had outplayed Hendrawan - but smashed into the net.

Even though Hendrawan played well in the 4., Jonassen gave his best - and this time it was enough. He beat the world champion in maybe his best match ever: The last game ended 7-2.

No. 4 - LS1

  Mette Sørensen, DEN
  - Judith Meulendijks, NED 3-7, 7-3, 7-4, 5-7, 7-0
                                (4', 13', 8', 10', 6')

Judith startet so strong, that she got the game point almost before the game started - but Mette managed to win the serve once - and got herself 3 points, before the game was over. 7-3.

Mette got back in the 2. game and won it. We where distracted by other matters, and did not witness the rest of the match. But Mette won...

No. 5 - MD2

Chow Choon Eng/Chan Choong Ming, MAS
  Jesper Larsen/Jim Laugesen, DEN

We lost the satelite broadcast at 5-4 to Eng/Ming in the first game due to heavy snowfall on the disc.
