The draw is to be made later this week and the seeding should place
England in the opposite half to reigning champions Denmark. "It means
facing Holland in our group will be a key challenge at that stage",
said BA of E Performance Director Finn Traerup Hansen today. "If we
then meet Denmark later on, it will not be as easy as two years ago
when we had a chance of beating them by winning three doubles matches.
We are not as strong now in women's doubles in particular. However, we
would give it a shot and see if we could at least tease them a
little".
England's medal hopes in the individual tournament from 16 - 20 April
must rest mainly with doubles pairings. Olympic mixed doubles
medallists Simon Archer and Jo Goode are returning to form after long
lay-offs through injury (Archer) and maternity leave (Goode). "Their
performances are improving all the time and they can be really
competitive when it counts", said Traerup Hansen.
Manchester's Colin Haughton is the leading men's singles player but
could find the going tough against top Danish opponents. Robert Blair,
formerly of Scotland, has made his first English squad since moving
South to improve his game. He will play in the mixed doubles with
Natalie Munt.
The England team will be weakened by the failure of Derbyshire's
experienced Donna Kellogg to win her fitness battle in time for the
European Championships.
Donna was one half of the successful partnership that won gold in the
ladies doubles at the 2000 European Championships in Glasgow and it is
particularly disappointing that she will not have the opportunity to
defend her title.
She was also a member of the silver medal winning team in the last
European Championships and would have taken part in the team event this
year if she had been fully fit.
Finn said;"If Donna had been match fit, she would have made a good
contribution to the team and it would have allowed us to spare some of
our other players, rather than playing the same players all the time"
