All England 2002 - LS - Camilla/Dai Yun

Yonex All England Open

6. - 10. march, the nia birmingham, England

Camilla Martin vs. Dai Yun

  Camilla MARTIN, DEN
  - DAI Yun, CHN 7-2, 7-4, 8-6 (41m)

A very long match, because every point was contested, and with a lot of long rallies. Camilla got at lead 5-1 in the first game, then came a period of serve changes - Dai Yun got a point and the game went to Camilla. The play was more even in the second game, where they were even 4-4, after Dai leading 3-4. Camilla lost then next serve, when she fell at the back line. She got up, but not fast enough to return properly. She did suffer minor skin burn, but she did not really notice before after the game. She won the crucial points, however. The last game was shorter, with more points scored in at row. Dai Yun got the lead to 1-3, Camilla evened and passed for at 5-3 lead on her serve, Dai Yun got 5-5. Then the fight began again, to 6-6 - before Camilla won the match with 8-6.

Camilla after the match:

She did not think Dai Yun was as sharp today, as she can be. Camilla wondered if it has something to do with the rumours, that Dai Yun and another chinese player had requested to retire, but had been refused. If that had happened to her, Camilla said, it would indeed take away some of the motivation. At 4-4 in the second game she did "fumble around", as she described it. Looking ahead at tomorrows final, she did not think about it too much. In her mind, it was just another tournament - but she did say, that this was her last chance of a title. She had come far this year, and who knows when that will happen again before her planned retirement in 2004.

At the time of the interview, the other ladies singles semifinals had not started yet. So she said, that Zhou Mi propably was the strongest of the two chinese girls. Gong Ruina had not really played since last august, so her form was more difficult to ascertain. [Gong Ruina later beat Zhou Mi in an even, drawn out match, going the full 5 games and ended in a very close decider.]
