All England 2001

Yonex All England Open

7. - 11. march, the nia birmingham, England

Pullela Gopichand, IND vs. Peter Gade, DEN

A very even match. Gopichand opened each game with af strong string of point scores. Peter followed suit at at slower, calculated pace. The end of the games saw long rallies, narrowly decided on the lines or on the net. Very few smashes. Both players kept very calm during most of the time. But in the end Gopichand openly show joy or grief, depending wether he won or lost a play. Peter Gade gave the impression, that he had everything under control - as everything went according to some plan, he had.

Peter Gade

At the press conference after the match

"One Slow Start to Many?" was the first question posed to the dane. He would not agree with that. Peter could not play as fast as he usually can, and Gopichand was very good. He played the way Peter expected, but he had more confidence. Gopichand has improved very much since Peter beat him during Thomas Cup. But given the normal speed back, Peter expected to win next time they meet.

He was very pleased with the fact that Gopichand has won now, and that he is in the men's singles top ten. It is good for badminton. "India is a big country, and we need them in badminton" he said.
