Seedings for Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships
ALL the World's Top 16 Men's Singles Players Vie for Title
The seedings for the 2001
Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships have been announced and
reflect a really high standard of competition for the National Indoor Arena
Birmingham crowd between Tuesday 7 and Sunday 11 March.
In a quality Men's Singles
competition, World No1 Peter Gade Christensen (Denmark) is top seeded and
defending champion and Olympic Bronze Medallist XIA Xuanze (P.R. China)
is seeded 2. Olympic Gold Medallist JI Xinpeng has to make do with Seed
3\4 as does Olympic Silver Medallist HENDRAWAN from Indonesia. Richard
Vaughan from Wales is seeded 9\16. All the Top 16 Players in the world
will be at the Championships.
In the Ladies' Singles
it seems to be a straight fight between top seed Camilla MARTIN, the World
Ranked No1 and defending champion and No2 seed GONG Zhichao from P R China
who beat her at Sydney in winning the gold medal. The Chinese are also
represented at 3\4 by last year's runner-up DAI Yun and GONG Ruina.
The
Men's Doubles
has provided a number of "dark horses" due to new unseeded pairings coming
together. World No2s Eng HIAN & Flandy LIMPELE from Indonesia are top
seeded and Jens ERIKSEN & Jesper LARSEN (Denmark) the World No3s are
seeded 2. England's Simon Archer & Nathan Robertson are seeded 5\8.
The unseeded pairings to
watch include Candra WIJAYA (Olympic Gold Medallist) & Sigit BUDIARTO
(Indonesia); Tony GUNAWAN (Olympic Gold Medallist) & Halim HERYANTO
(Indonesia); HA Tae-Kwon (Olympic Bronze Medallist & defending All
England Champion) & CHUNG Jae-Sung (Korea); and finally YOO Yong-Sung
(Olympic Silver Medallist and All England Runner-Up last year) & JUNG
Sung-Gyun (Korea).
The Men's Doubles competition
promises much!
In the Mixed Doubles,
World No1s Michael SOGAARD and Rikke OLSEN from Denmark are seeded 1 and
ZHANG Jun and GAO Ling from P R China are 2. Simon Archer and Gail Emms
following their success at the English National Championships are seeded
5\8. The English pair are themselves something of a dark horse having only
come together at the Nationals. However they will be buoyed by the fact
that the No1 Seeds are the pairing that Archer and Jo Goode beat in the
bronze medal match at Sydney.
In the Ladies' Doubles
the No1 Seeds are World Ranked 5 Helene KIRKEGAARD and Rikke OLSEN. The
No2 Seeds are Ann-Lou JORGENSEN and Mette SCHJOLDAGER. Both couples are
from Denmark.
In all, 27 countries are
represented at the Championships.
